Thirteen of the featured artists were once Artist Life Members of the NAC, making the exhibition a celebration of both the famed movement and the NAC's own history.

Famed artists Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas were born just two years apart in the 1830s, hailed from similar French upbringings and ran in the same circles. At times, they were friends but at other times, frenemies.

A new exhibit coming to The Metropolitan Museum of Art this fall will explore the friendship and rivalry of these two masters of 19th-century French art. "Manet/Degas" runs from September 24-January 7, 2024.

The Met is opening a free science and art play space for kids

81st Street Studio

This art and science play space designed for kids ages 3-11 and their families welcomes visitors to use their senses for exploration. Kids can smell different types of wood, look through a microscope, play oversized musical instruments, and try digital activities to learn about different materials. Best of all, this newly designed drop-in space on the Met’s ground level is completely free for kids and their caregivers; it opens on September 9 with a daylong children’s festival.

Within its 3,500-square-foot area, 81st Street Studio features both digital and analog experiences designed to encourage making, investigation, critical thinking, problem-solving and appreciation for materials and their properties. Drop-in activities and self-directed art- and science-making activities will be available during museum hours.

A large music station includes a standing guitar, a castanet wall, an organ, and a marimba, all designed by the music/audio pros at Yamaha. Yamaha also created a bird chime that will play sounds to mark important times of the day in the studio. The musical components are designed to help kids understand how materials influence sound through instruments. Plus, they’re a ton of fun for kids of all ages.

Families who want to continue the exploration after leaving the studio can pick up a Met Field Guide, a packet of tools with guidance for an adventure in the museum and in Central Park. The field guide encourages kids to learn more about the scientific aspects of The Met collection and Central Park as a field scientist, collecting data while also earning stickers and badges.

The Oculus is transforming into a haunted Halloween hub next month

Kicking off on Friday, September 29, and running through Wednesday, November 1, Halloween House—which welcomed 100,000 visitors across its various locations last year—will take over the transportation and shopping hub at 185 Greenwich Street with an array of immersive, intricately designed themed rooms: a Glow in the Dark space, a mysterious Vampires' Lair, a Horror Movie Graveyard and an indoor pumpkin patch, among others.

New York City’s largest haunted house is about to open in Times Square

Starting September 14, “Horrorwood Studios” opens its freakish doors in Times Square at 300 West 43rd Street for a spooky season of “heart-pounding” immersive experiences from artistic directors Will Munro and Katie McGeoch (the duo has spent more than two decades as the heads of Six Flags’ Fright Fest). Dubbed “TerrorVision - Live Screaming Your Nightmares,” you’ll live out your Samara dreams and step through a flickering TV screen into a horrible scene.

Filled with 140 actors across 20,000 square feet, what could be the largest haunted house in NYC, you’ll enter under the guise that you’re behind the scenes at the filming of an upcoming TerrorVision Halloween episode. “As things go terribly awry, the screen shatters and guests are suddenly cast as the unwitting new star, forced to face three tales of terror with each manifesting as an immersive walk through haunted house style experience, overflowing with gruesome creatures and movie magic special effects.”

Executive Producer Dalton M. Dale says they’ve hired Hollywood’s best makeup and special effects artists who will transform the cast into terrifying creatures nightly.

It sounds intense. According to organizers, the space will contain snow, wind, giant creatures and “seemingly impossible effects constantly happening all around,” in this nightmare world. Did Times Square really need this?

Tickets, which are $39 per person, can be purchased at facetheterror.com, with early bird pricing available until September 19. Don’t even think about it for kids 13 and under!
